High Truth - Understanding Substance Abuse and Addiction

“High Truths… rising above, with strength and love.”— A CHV Team Offering In 2024, the National Institute on Drug Abuse reported that 8 million Americans needed treatment for substance misuse—but only 2 million sought help. This statistic is from the US, but all countries are affected similarly. Substance abuse is not a distant issue. It affects everyone—our families, friends, neighbors, and even Sai communities. In facing this reality, the CHV Team turned to Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s divine guidance. What does Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba say about substance abuse and misuse of the human body? “Human birth is meant to experience divinity and not to crave for fleeting pleasures. The human body is a divine gift, which is being put to improper use instead of its proper purpose of adoring God. Do not be under the mistaken notion that the body is meant only for eating and enjoying physical pleasures. Certain duties have been assigned to man, by performing which he will be able to experience happiness at the level of the body, mind, senses, and spirit.” — Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol 37 (2004). Inspired by these teachings, the CHV Community Team presents a new podcast series: High Truths—offering spiritual, practical, and scientific insights on substance use and addiction. Topics will include: Causes and risk factors Substances commonly misused Coping mechanisms Impact on the body and mind Pathways to healing and support. We offer the first podcast of the series on “High Truths” on this Aradhana Day in His Centenary birth year and seek Swami’s blessings. The first podcast is an introduction to the topic by conversation between a parent in the community and from an expert, Sridevi Devaraj, who sees many of the effects of substance misuse in her line of work and offers her own thoughts on this important matter. Together, let us raise awareness, inject and spread hope, and walk the path of transformation—anchored in truth, love, and service.
